Options KeyboardThe Keyboard tab allows you to select the keys used to perform screen captures.

Each program function is listed below; you can reassign keys by selected them from the drop-down lists. If you assign a key that is in use by another function, CapSnapper will swap the key assignments. The drop-down lists include the default keystrokes, turning the PrintScreen, ScrollLock and Pause/Break keys into a mini "Capture Keypad." You can use other keys if you desire (pick Other... from the lists), but be careful not to assign keys you need to use during your application or general Windows activity!

Choose Key

Visual examples are provided for some, using a running copy of our application ThumbsPlus.

Current window with owned

This captures the active top-level window, including all other top-level windows that it owns. Generally, this means menus, pop-ups, palettes and other non-modal dialogs belonging to it. Here's a sample from ThumbsPlus.

Default keystroke: PrintScreen

Current window only

This captures the active top-level window, but does not include other top-level windows that it owns. However, if it owns windows that occlude it, portions of them will be shown in the capture.

Default keystroke: Ctrl+PrintScreen

Entire desktop

Capture the entire desktop (all monitors).

Default keystroke: Shift+PrintScreen

Current monitor only

Capture the monitor containing the active top-level window only.

Default keystroke: Ctrl+Shift+PrintScreen

All application windows

Capture all top-level windows belonging to the foreground application. This can be useful when an application creates multiple unowned top-level windows. Here is an example from ThumbsPlus.

Default keystroke: None.

Window client area only

Captures the client area only of the current top-level application window. This excludes the title bar, borders and (usually) the menu bar. In some applications, the menu is actually part of the client area. Here is a sample from a ThumbsPlus dialog box .

Default keystroke: Pause

Keyboard focus window

Captures the window with keyboard focus only. This is useful for capturing only the current input window; for example

Current Focus

Default keystroke: Shift+ScrollLock

Active owned only (menus)

This is the same as "Current window with owned,"except the current window is excluded. This is useful for capturing active menus.

Default keystroke: Shift+Pause

App owned only (menus)

This is the same as "All application windows" except that it excludes the current active top-level window. It is also useful for capturing active menus. Whether this or the previous options works best depends on the application.

Default keystroke: None

Mouse Capture

This key will allow you to draw a rectangle on the screen to select the capture area. See Mouse Selection for more information.

Default keystroke: ScrollLock

Reset to defaults

Use this button to set all actions to their default keystrokes.
