Installing WhoHasNT
WhoHasNT consists of two parts - the GUI program (WhoHasNT.exe) and the optional WhoHasNT Service (WhoHasNTService.exe).
The GUI program is used to check and clear files and also controls the installation of the service.
The service only needs to be installed if you wish non privileged users to be able to run WhoHasNT
The WhoHasNT GUI Program
The purpose of the GUI program is to check open files, clear connections and configure and check the individual instances of the WhoHasNT service.
The GUI program can be run from a workstation, or from any of the servers you will be checking
The program can be installed either to the C: drive of the machine, or it can be run from a network location.
The GUI tool is automatically installed and a Start Menu icon created when you run the WhoHasNT Installer.
The WhoHasNT Service
The job of the WhoHasNT service (WhoHasNTService.exe) is to accept requests for file opens/clear connections from users, perform those actions on their behalf and return the results to the GUI
The service can be installed automatically via the WhoHasNT GUI, or manually.
To install the service using the WhoHasNT GUI program:
- Start the WhoHasNT.exe program
- From the Service Control tab, select either This Machine or Remote Machine
- If installing on a Remote Machine, then enter the name of the server.
- Click Connect. If WhoHasNT encounters any errors when connecting to the server, the error codes and messages will be displayed in the rightmost box.
- Click Install. WhoHasNT will attempt to install the service on the nominated machine. As above, if any errors are encountered, they will be logged.
- Click Start Service.
Details:
When you click "Install", the following happens:
- The WhoHasNT program will attempt to connect to the Admin$ share on the nominated machine (if a remote machine).
- The WhoHasNTService.exe file will be copied to \\servername\Admin$\System32\WhoHasNTService.exe
- The WhoHasNT service will be created on the nominated machine. The service will run as "Local System" and is set to Auto Start.
- All the above will be performed using the credentials of the user running the admin program. If this user has insufficient permissions, or if the Admin$ share is unavailable, then an error will occur. In that case, you will need to use the Manual Installation method.
Manual Installation of the service
If the service is unable to be installed remotely because of permissioning or share issues, a manual service install will need to be performed.
To install Manually, follow these steps:
- Log on to the server in question as a user with sufficient rights to install a service (usually an Administrator).
- Copy the WhoHasNTService.exe file to c:\windows\system32. StopGadget can be installed to a different location if required.
- From a command prompt run : WhoHasNTService.exe /install
- This will install the service on the machine.
