FAQ
Common ProxyInspector/MailDetective FAQ
Q1: What are the limitations of the unregistered copy?
A1: Unregistered copy of ProxyInspector has the following limitations:
- does not allow to save the reports
- does not allow to print the reports
- does not allow to send the reports by e-mail
- works only 30 days
- during the 30 day trial period the program will periodically remind about registering.
Q2: If I register, will I get all upgrades for free?
A2: Upgrades within one version will be free(for example from 1.1.x to 1.2.x or from 2.3.x to 2.5.x). Upgrades from one version to another (ex. from 1.x to 2.x) will not be free, registered users will receive considerable discounts when upgrading from one version to another.
Q3: How to remove the information from ProxyInspector database?
A3: In order to delete records from the database for a certain period of time click Database | Delete records. If you would like to delete all entries from the database, the easiest way is to copy all files from <PI>\dbclean\local folder to <Documents and Settings>\All Users\Application Data\ADVSoft\PI_Version\db\local folder (ProxyInspector should not be connected to database at that time).
Q4: On ProxyInspector startup I see the following message: "An error occurred while attempting to initialize Borland Database Engine (error $210C)"
A4: You already have some version of Borland Database Engine (BDE) installed on your machine and it causes the versions conflict. You may try to remove the following files from the ProxyInspector directory:
- bantam.dll
- idapi32.dll
- idbat32.dll
- idpdx32.dll
- idr20009.dll
- idsql32.dll
Q5: How can I automate the process of importing log files and report creation?
A5: You can do that with the ProxyInspector/MailDetective console.
ProxyInspector for WinProxy FAQ
Q1: Which WinProxy versions are supported by ProxyInspector?
A1: Ositis WinProxy 3.x or higher.
Q2: Why does the traffic reported by ProxyInspector not correspond to the traffic shown by the provider?
A2: There could be several reasons for it:
- Provider counts traffic on the interface while WinProxy counts HTTP, TCP/UDP, FTP and other protocol traffic, thus it does not count IP/TCP/UDP headers. Resulting inconsistencies depend on the MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit - for Ethernet the size of the frame) and may be up to 5-10%.
- Your provider counts 1 Kb as 1000 byte while ProxyInspector counts 1 Kb as 1024 bytes by default.
- This value is configurable - Database | Program settings | Reports | Traffic information format
Traffic that bypasses WinProxy. It is possible if WinProxy computer is set up as router or has a mail server, which works directly.
Setting ProxyInspector for Working With Interbase/Firebird
1. After installation a clean database file db.gdb will be placed in <ProxyInspector>\dbclean\interbase6
Registering the database in Interbase
2. Run IBConsole.exe on a computer where Interbase is stored (the file is found in bin directory of the Interbase installation, you can also download it here)
3. Connect to the local server - Server | Login (default username/password - SYSDBA/masterkey)
4. Register the ProxyInspector database - Database | Register
if ProxyInspector and Interbase are installed on the same machine, the path to the database file should be as follows: <ProxyInspector>\db\interbase6\db.gdb
if ProxyInspector and Interbase are installed on different machines, please copy db.gdb from <ProxyInspector>\dbclean\interbase6 to your database catalog and specify the path in Database | File field
ProxyInspector Settings

ProxyInspector Update Instructions
These instructions are valid only for updates to the product versions listed below (or future versions) from the previous versions of our products:
- ProxyInspector for ISA Server 2.2
- ProxyInspector for WinRoute 2.5
- ProxyInspector for WinProxy 2.5
- ProxyInspector for WinGate 2.5
These and all future versions of ProxyInspector use a new database format to help increase productivity of the new database compression feature. The introduction of the new database format also delivers the 2 times import performance improvement over the previous versions. It also helps dramatically decrease the database size and speed up the report creation (5 times improvement compared to the previous versions). But switching to the new format requires you to re-import the log files into the database.
After the new version installation the clean database in the new format will be stored in the dbclean\local subfolder of the ProxyInspector folder (for the local database) and dbclean\interbase6 subfolder of the ProxyInspector folder (for the Interbase/Firebird database). Copy these files to the db\local subfolder of the ProxyInspector folder (for the local database) and db\interbase6 subfolder of the ProxyInspector folder (for the Interbase/Firebird database). Be sure to quit ProxyInspector before copying the files. When you copy the database files, you should re-import the log files with the database compression feature enabled (default).
If you use Interbase/Firebird, you should also install the latest SQLPack version.
