Textanz
Textanz is analysis tool that calculates frequencies of words, phrases or wordforms in given text. The resulting list can be sorted in various ways and used to navigate to particular occurrences in text. Writers and editors needs this function to help them identify word or phrase overuse or repetition. Software developers, web masters, and writers who prepare content for the Internet will find Textanz a valuable tool to help them choose keywords and key word phrases for improved optimization of web pages within the search engines, or for searching for repeating fragments of program source code.
As a reader, you can use Textanz to examine an author’s most frequently used words and phrases and better understand his purpose and writing objectives. The frequency dictionary created by a Textanz analysis enables you to form a stylistic portrait of the writer. In linguistics, this data is unique to authors in much the same way as handwriting is unique to an individual.
Yet another capability of this program is building a concordance of text : list of all words and contexts they are used in. In some ways it is similar to frequency list, but includes also words with frequency=1 and allows to see all contexts collected together.
In addition , Textanz calculates a number of summary parameters , that helps to get some statistics and estimate the readability of text corpus.
Textanz is not an editor program. There are plenty of well-known editors with functions specific to the text type: formatted document, HTML, program source code, etc. The intension to write a successful competitor to all these excellent instruments in-one obviously will lead to failure. Instead of doing that, we focused our efforts on the development of pure analysis tool. With this software it is very easy to copy-paste text between applications in Windows. Another aspect is safety: users are provided with confidence that Textanz will not affect original document in any way and perform only reporting.
First thing to do when you want to use Textanz is to load the text. Use "Text" menu or toolbar button to load text from a file or paste it from clipboard. Only plain text will be displayed and processed. For example, the right way to analyse text from Microsoft Word document is to copy it from Word to clipboard and then paste to Textanz rather than open .DOC file directly in Textanz. Same comes to HTML, PDF, etc. - use clipboard to copy plain text from specific application. Loading from file is an appropriate option for simple text files, program source files, etc. Once file is loaded "Reload file" menu item becomes available. Note that Textanz does not update results automatically when reloaded file differs from previously analyzed one. If file has been changed since the last read, recalculation should be performed.
When the text is loaded, Textanz is ready to perform text analysis actions. The button "Calculate" is always working in context of currently active tab. I.e. when "Phrase frequency" tab is selected, clicking "Calculate" will fill this tab with data. When "Summary" is selected, clicking "Calculate" fills the summary fields and so on.
