Developing Project

Now we can move to project development.

If you are in the workspace view, switch to Gantt Chart mode: choose Gantt Chart in menu View.

A two-part window will appear: the left part of the window is a list of tasks with different parameters, the right one is a graphic representation of the left part, a Gantt Chart.

  • Add Task
  • Assign plan dates
  • Deadlines

To add a new task use Insert New Task in menu Tasks. To name the task you should select the cell by clicking on it and enter the name. Do not forget to quit the text edit mode for saving the changes. For this just click on any screen place out of the task.

Task: Add the following tasks to the project:

  • Assign date
  • Make up the list of participants
  • Choose a place
  • Plan the picnic
  • Fix the budget
  • Buy food
  • Announce the time of the departure
  • Gather for the departure
  • Summarize

To add a subtask select a task and use Add New Subtask in menu Tasks.

Add to the task "Plan the picnic" the following subtasks:

  • Make up entertainment list
  • Make up food list
  • Make up equipment list

Now we get the following list of tasks:

Assign plan dates

Now let us set Start and Finish dates and duration for each task:

  • Start – date of the task start
  • Finish – date of the task finish
  • Duration – task duration

To set a date, double-click on the cell with the date and and press the arrow on the right– a calendar will appear.Choose the necessary date in the calendar. To shift to the previous/following month use the right and left arrows.

Assign plan dates

You need to specify just Start and one of the parameters left – Finish or Duration, the third parameter will be defined by the program automatically.

Task: Set the following dates for tasks completion:

  • Set the date: 02.08.04 - 02.08.04, 1day
  • Choose a place: 02.08.04 - 04.08.04, 3 days
  • Make up the list of participants: 04.08.04 - 06.08.04, 3 days
  • Plan the picnic
    • Make up entertainment list: 09.08.04 - 11.08.04, 3 days
    • Make up food list: 09.08.04 - 13.08.04, 5 days
    • Make up equipment list:12.08.04 - 12.08.04, 1 day
  • Fix the budget: 16.08.04 - 16.08.04, 1 day
  • Buy food: 19.08.04 - 20.08.04, 2 days
  • Announce the time of departure:19.08.04 - 19.08.04, 1 day
  • Gather for the departure: 20.08.04 - 20.08.04, 1 day
  • Summarize: 23.08.04 - 23.08.04, 1day

The time of task completion is defined by the program automatically.

Deadlines

Deadlines are set for the tasks fulfillment time of which cannot be put off. For details see Deadlines in Lesson 2.

Tasks with no deadline set in the Deadline column are marked NA – not available. To set a deadline for a task, you need:

  1. Select a task
  2. Use Deadline in menu Tasks

Task: Set the deadline for the task "Choose a place".
