Symbols
Symbols. Pictures. Styles of the topics. Changing the level of detail of topics.
Once the structure is complete, we can then see the tasks on the whole. We will continue working with the map that we developed.

In this lesson we are going to start by adding some symbols to our map. Symbols are conventional signs used in Mind Mapping to mark the characteristics of the topic in visual form. They help to convey the meaning of the mapped ideas, assign priorities, and add auxiliary visual comments. The meaning of a symbol is reflected not only by its appearance, but also in the floating tip associated with the Symbol.
Now we are ready to mark topics with symbols. For this:
- Activate the Symbols floating dialog by clicking the corresponding tab or open using the View / Dialogs / Symbols menu command.
- Now select the topic and press on the corresponding symbols in the Symbols floating dialog. A symbol is now associated with the topic you were working with.
Let's assume for this lesson that “search engine listing” and “writing articles” are the highest priorities. Mark them with the symbol. The task of the lowest priority – paid advertisement – mark with the symbol. Other important notes: the time we can spend on creating the web site is limited , magazine advertisement is expensive , and choosing the right keywords for each specific search engine is work that needs additional research .
To remove a symbol from topic, click on the symbol again in the Symbols floating dialog.

ConceptDraw MINDMAP allows you use additional objects which are not entered in the hierarchical structure of a mind map. You can draw your own objects, use ready clipart objects or pictures from external files.
To make the mind map more visual, add to the topics images illustrating each of the associated activities.
Now we can activate the Clipart floating dialog by clicking the corresponding tab or open using the View / Dialogs / Clipart Window menu command. Select the objects you wish to use and drag them with your mouse in the map.

Now we are going to assign these objects to the corresponding topics. For this:
- Select the objects you are going to assign with your mouse.
- Drag the selected objects to the corresponding topics and release the mouse button when the topic is highlighted with a purple color. Now the object is associated with the topic.
When you select an attached object, you can see a dashed line that goes from it to the topic it is attached to. Now, when we move the topic, the picture will move with it.
ConceptDraw MINDMAP allows you to not only attach pictures to the topics, but also to embed them in the topics. To embed clipart object in the Link exchange topic:
- Activate the Clipart floating dialog by clicking the corresponding tab or open using the View / Dialogs / Clipart Window menu command.
- Select in it the required object and drag it on the topic. The topic will be highlighted in orange. Release the mouse button and the selected clipart is now embedded in the topic.

Now all the needed elements of the mind map are in place. To attract additional attention, we can also change some of the elements. We will mark the name of the main idea to draw additional attention by using the font and color parameters found in the Format toolbar.

This is our resulting mind map:

The bottom line:
- In ConceptDraw MINDMAP you can use symbols to code the meaning of topics to attract attention or aid in remembering.
- You can use images and illustrations to clarify the diagram and make it more visual.
- Objects can be easily attached to the topics of a mind map or embedded in them.
- You can change the style attributes of the topics.
