Initializing External Keys

An external electronic key must be initialized before use. During initialization a random binary code that is called the external key code is written to it.

When using an electronic key, make sure that appropriate key type is selected on the "Options"à"External Keys" tab. Besides, a driver must be installed for that type of keys.

To initialize an external key in the standard or protected mode:

  • Select the "Services"à"Initialize key" menu item.
  • In the "Initialize key" dialog:
    • Select the "Electronic key" radio-button if you want to initialize the electronic key in the standard mode. Next, connect the electronic key and press "OK". If the key has been previously initialized in the protected mode, you will have to enter the old PIN code.
If you are using the given key for the first time, some types of electronic keys require a PIN code even for initialization in the standard mode. It is necessary for initial unlocking of the electronic key to allow for writing data to it. This PIN code is set by the manufacturer. The value for any specific type of electronic key can be found either in the e-keyinfo.txt file in the StrongDisk Pro folder, or in the manuals that came with the electronic key.
    • Select the "Electronic key in private mode" radio-button if you want to initialize the electronic key in the protected mode. Next, connect the electronic key and press "OK". In the dialog to appear enter the old PIN code if the key has been initialized before or the new PIN code if this is the first time the key is initialized.
    • Select the "File-key" radio button if you want to store the random binary code in a file key. When initializing, the name and full path to the file key should be specified in the appropriate field.

To prevent data loss due to loss or damage of the external key we recommend you to make a copy of it and store this copy in a safe place where the attackers will be unable to find it. File-keys are better stored on CDs then on diskettes since the latter can be damaged during transportation or storage. An electronic key can also be copied to a file-key.
