Folder TEMP on Protected Disk

During their work many applications create so-called temporary files. For example, temporary files are created by all MS Office applications, by WinZip and WinRAR and by many other popular programs. Applications can write into temporary files some auxiliary data, as well as the information from the documents, which you are working with. For example, in temporary files of MS Word one can always find the data, which is typed by the user. When files are extracted from RAR or ZIP archive, at first files being extracted are written into temporary folder and only after it to the place specified by the user. And there is no warranty that temporary files will be written to the same disk, where the main document is stored. In most cases they are written to the folder \Temp or \Windows\Temp of the disk, where Windows are installed.

Usually, when the application is closed, its temporary files are deleted. But often it is not the case. For example, if Word is closed due to its internal error, which happens very often, all temporary file remain undeleted. But even, when temporary files are deleted, their contents for a long time remain physically written on the disk.

Therefore, even if you keep all your files with confidential information on protected disks and never write them on common disks, you still cannot be sure that your confidential information never will be written on common disks, where from it can be easily extracted. More likely, you can be sure that at least a little part of your confidential data can be found on the hard drive unencrypted.

To solve this problem StrongDisk Pro provides facilities to easily configure your system so the temporary files will be created on protected disk instead of common.

To set the mode, in which temporary files will be created on protected disk, you should set "Folder TEMP on protected disk" checkbox on "Security" tab of "Parameters" dialog. All other options it is recommended to leave default. In this case TMP and TEMP environment variables will be set to T:\TEMP, and temporary files will be created in this folder. Protected disk T: will be created anew on every start of StrongDisk Pro with always different encryption key, which will not be saved and, therefore, after finishing the work access to the temporary files will be impossible.

You can change the letter of the disk, where TEMP folder will be stored, by selecting required letter from the list.

If "Use existing protected disk" option is selected then temporary disk will not be created automatically. Instead you must in the beginning of the work manually mount protected disk to the corresponding letter. In this case for storing TEMP you can use Permanent protected disk, which you are most often working.

If the disk, where TEMP is stored, is not mounted before launching applications, applications may work incorrectly or even not start. In particular, they may create temporary files in another place instead of protected disk.

Some applications do not obey common rules when choosing place to store temporary files and may create their temporary files somewhere else instead of \Temp folder on protected disk. Such behavior is likely to Adobe Photoshop in Windows 95/98. Or place, where temporary files are created, can be specified in parameters of the particular application. In this case you should specify \Temp folder on protected disk.

All MS Office applications work with temporary files according to the common rules and do not require additional configuration. In WinRAR and WinZip you can manually specify the place, where temporary files will be created, though by default it is set to the common TEMP folder and does not require any changes.
