Encrypted Magic Folders Extras

Automatic Encryption

No matter how good a program is at hiding files, the files still do exist. They can be found by advanced disk editing software, or if Magic Folders is uninstalled, or by installing the hard drive into another computer, etc.. That's why we created Encrypted Magic Folders. With EMF your hidden files are automatically and transparently encrypted, and if you chose, their filesnames can be scrambled as well. That way, if the files are found, their contents are still secure.

The encryption is totally transparent. You use the files normally. The encryption and decryption of the files is all done instantly and automatically in the background as you use the files.

You change this setting by selecting the desired folder in your Private Folder List and clicking/unclicking the check box next to "Encrypt Files"

Don't forget your password. It is only with your password that files can be recovered in case of a disaster. The system administrator will not be able to decrypt your files, only someone with your password.

Scrambling of Filenames

EMF can also scramble the names of files in your Private Folders. Should EMF be uninstalled by someone else, or bypassed using sophisticated disk editing software, the names of the files would still be scrambled thereby providing no clue as to their contents.

You change this setting by selecting the desired folder in your Private Folder list and slecting (or unselecting) the "Scramble Filenames" option.

Only files in Private Folders can have their names scrambled. Folder names cannot be scrambled. (In theory we could do this but it would require almost double the system resources and we decided that was too high a price.)

Unlike Automatic Encryption, filename scrambling does not occur as you use the file. Rather, all names are scrambled when you hide the files and then unscrambled at the time you make the files visible. Therefore when you first enter your password to go into Magic Folders you will have to wait while the filenames are being unscrambled. Likewise, when you subsequently hide your files/folders you will have to wait while the filenames are being scrambled.

Shutting down your computer without first hiding your files/folders will leave the filenames unscrambled.
