Creating New Icon, Cursor & Bitmap
- Do one of the following:
- On the File\New menu, click Icon, Cursor, or Bitmap.
- Press Ctrl + N.
- On the toolbar, click the New
button.
- On the toolbar, from the New
button combo box, select New Icon, New Cursor, or New Bitmap.
If you have chosen to create a new bitmap, the Create a New Bitmap window opens:

If you have chosen to create a new icon, the Create a New Icon window opens:

If you have chosen to create a new cursor, the Create a New Cursor window opens. It looks like the Create a New Icon window.
- In the Type box, select another type if you have decided to create an image of another type. You can select one of the following image types: Icon, Cursor, or Bitmap.
- In the Name box, type the name of the new image file.
- In the From box, select
- New Image, to create the new image from scratch;
- Current Image, to create the new image from the current image;
- Note. If no image is open in Paint Express, this option is not available.
- Image File, to create the new image from an existing image file;
- Note. Current version of Paint Express allows to create new images from existing .bmp, .ico, .cur, .png, .jpg, and .jpeg files.
- Clipboard Image, to create the new image from the clipboard image;
- Note. If the clipboard doesn't contain any image, this option is not available.
- If you have chosen to create the new image from an existing image file, set the name of that file in the File Name box. In order to do this, use the Brouse ... button to open the standard Open window and choose the file.
- In the Color Depth group, choose the appropriate color depth for the new image.
- In the Size group, choose the size of the new image from the selection of predefined sizes (16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 128x128), or choose the Custom Size and enter the width and height of the new image in the corresponding boxes (uncheck the Square box if the width and height of the new image are not equal).
- Note. If you have chosen to create the new image from Current Image, from Image File, or from Clipboard Image, you can get the size of that image and set it automatically in corresponding boxes by clicking the Get width and height of the image button.
- To create an icon/cursor with multiple images, in the Multiple Image List indicate the formats of the images that has to be created. To do this, follow the instructions:
- To add a new image format to the Multiple Image List, set image's Color Depth and Size as described in steps 6 and 7, and click Add Format button. Repeat these actions until all necessary image formats are added to the list.
- Note. The image format is displayed in the list as width x height - color depth.
- To remove an image format from the Multiple Image List, click Remove Format button.
To remove all image formats from the Multiple Image List, click Clear button.
- Notes.
- If the Multiple Image List is empty, the new icon/cursor will have just one image. Its format will be determined by the values set in Color Depth and Size groups.
- To icons/cursors you can later add images with new formats. See the "Add a new format image to an icon/cursor" page for details.
- To save the current state of the window, check the Remember box.
- If you choose to create the new image from an existing image, you can set additional options. To do this, click the Options... button. See "Change create options" page for details.
- Note. For simplicity, Options... button is enabled only when necessary.
- Click the OK button.
- Notes.
- For icons, cursors, and 32-bit bitmaps the newly created image is filled with screen color. See the "Screen and Inverse colors" page for details.
- For 1, 4, 8, and 24-bit bitmaps the newly created image is filled with background color. See the "Foreground and Background colors" page for details
