  • File, Discovery Options, or click on the Discovery Options button (a green screwdriver) of the File toolbar. The General Tab is shown by default.
Methods
  • Ping required: Checked by default. Uncheck it if you want to discover nodes behind firewalls not accepting ICMP
  • Use DNS: You ask a DNS to resolve IP to Name
  • Use SNMP: Try to get SNMP information from the remote node
  • Use MAC Addresses: get MAC addresses from ARP table. LAN only
  • Use NetBIOS: get NetBIOS name, domain, adapter type and MAC Address
  • Use TCP Port Analysis: check to enable port analysis (text strings returned). See the TCP Ports Tab for more information.
  • Use TCP Port Scan: Scans selected ports during discovery. See the TCP Ports Tab for more information.
  • Use WMI: use the standard DCOM WMI mechanism to find selected values. See the WMI and WMI Credentials Tabs.
Map Update - In
  • Renew already found: the node in the map with the same address is replaced. All manual information for this node is lost.
  • Skip already found: the process will avoid scanning IP addresses already in the map
  • Update:
    • Permanent ID is IP Address: the following properties are transmitted to the node with same IP address: Note, Name, Monitor status, Type.
    • Permanent ID is Name (DNS): the manual properties are given to the node in the map matching the name of the new discovered node.
Map Update - Out
  • Delete nodes not alive: this is a way to remove old nodes that are in the map but are not anymore alive on the network.
    • Always delete: do not question. If the node is not alive, it is deleted (unless it is marked as locked ! See Node Properties)
    • Ask: stops the discovery and asks what you want to do with the node.
    • If last update is older than: if the last update values of the nodes is older than the specified number of days, it is automatically deleted.
  • Log discovery to file: If checked, a log file (log.txt) is created in the path where NetworkView.exe is installed. It contains the details of the discovery process (success or failures) with date and time. You can view this file with the menu: Logs, Discovery Log.
