Alerts

Email Alerts

To change the preferences for alerting, select the menu:

  • File, Preferences, or click on the Preferences button of the File toolbar (a red screwdriver)
  • Choose the Email Alerts tab

The following values can be set:

data recovery download restore windows vista file recovery software free
key drive file recovery flash card data recovery digital camera repair
laptop recovery deleted files recovery download password recovery software
  • Enable SMTP alerting: the program will send a SMTP mail when a one or more nodes will be down. The email will contain a summary list of the nodes currently DOWN, STILL DOWN and UP AGAIN. You specify the exact content of the email with the Message Editor.
  • From: This is the email address used to send the email.
  • To: The email addresses the alerts will be sent to, separated by a semicolon (for example: test@test.net;test2@test2.org)
  • SMTP Server: the DNS name or TCP/IP address of the system that will receive or relay the mail. Typically something like: mail.test.com or 192.168.1.1
  • SMTP Server Logon: If your SMTP server requires authentication, enter the logon name that will allow access to its functionality. Otherwise, just let this field and the next one (password) empty.
  • Password: If you entered a Logon for your SMTP server, this is the associated password. Otherwise blank if no authentication is needed.
  • Send the email _ times: You can choose how many emails are sent. This value is set to 1 by default. If you want a continuous flow of emails, enter 0. This value is only valid when a node is down. You cannot change the number of emails sent when a node comes up again, this value is always 1. An example will help:
If you choose 5 as the number of emails, you will receive a maximum of 5 emails, plus 1 additional email when the node comes up again (which could be hours later...)
  • Display a warning on SMTP errors: if the SMTP server you specified is not available for some reason, an error dialog is shown. A SMTP error log is created automatically when there is something wrong with SMTP. The file is SmtpErr.log, located in the NetworkView executable directory. You can remove the warning dialogs by unchecking this option. You can view this file with the menu Logs, Error Log.
  • Log all emails to a file: a file is created, containing the body of the alert emails. The document filename and a .log extension are used for creating this text file. You can view this file with the menu Logs, Email Log.

Custom Alerts

To change the preferences for the Custom Alerts, select the menu:

  • File, Preferences, or click on the Preferences button in the File toolbar (a red screwdriver)
  • Then choose the Custom Alerts tab

Two different kinds of alerts are available:

  • Individual Up and Down events. This is the same information that you find in the Event log file. Each Up or Down event triggers an alert.
    • Run this external program: Give the location and program name that you want to run, and specify one or several of these parameters:
$T$ Date and Time
$CR$ New Line
$M$ MAC Address
$A$ TCP/IP Address
$Y$ Node Type
$D$ SNMP System Description
$B$ NetBIOS Name
$O$ NetBIOS Domain
$C$ SNMP Contact
$I$  SNMP Location

For example: net send * $t$ : $a$ $n$ $d$ $y$.

  • Network Status Summary : this allows you to send grouped information on node status. After checking all the nodes in the map, it contains the summary of which nodes are DOWN, STILL DOWN or UP AGAIN.
    • Run this external program: Give the location and program name that you want to run, and specify one the two available parameters:
      $L$ Long Message
      $S$ Short Message

$L$ represents a text containing all the information that you defined in the Message Editor, with the Summary Custom Alerts template selected.
$S$ is the same as $L$, but truncated to 150 characters. The rest of the message is lost.

Send the alert _ times: Specify the number of messages that are sent for a specific event. If a node is DOWN and you entered 3, a maximum of 3 messages are sent. If another DOWN event happens meanwhile, the count is reset.
      0 means send continuously.

Sound Alerts

To change the preferences for the Sound Alerts, select the menu:

  • File, Preferences, or click on the Preferences button in the File toolbar (a red screwdriver)
  • Then choose the Sound tab

The following values can be set:

  • Enable Sound Alert: NetworkView will produce a sound for each UP or DOWN alert event.
  • Beep: Two different beeps, low+high for UP events, and high+low for DOWn events.
  • Little Music: Two different little beep sequences
  • Play a .wav file: choose the sound you like for Up and DOWN events. You can test the .wav files by pressing the ? button next to the file name.
  • Play continuously: this will play alert sounds at the interval specified in Preferences, Monitoring, then Alerts Threshold.

A maximum a 3 sounds (=3 DOWN nodes) is played, either one time or continuously. For example, if your hear 3 sound alerts, it means that there are at least 3 nodes not responding. The 3 sounds are then repeated every x seconds (x = value in Alerts Threshold). If "Play continuously" is checked, you will hear the sound until the nodes are up again.
