Running as Service
If you choose to install the service component EventMeister will monitor your logs even when there is no one logged onto the host computer. In this case, the EventMeister application is used as a front-end to configure feeds and notifications, and to view collected feed data. The application can be quit at any time without interrupting monitoring and notification. Once installed and running, the service will start automatically every time your computer is started. Notifications will fire as normal, with the exception that popups will only be displayed when the front end is running.
Installing or uninstalling the service component
Installation/ removal of the service component is handled by the installation wizard.
IMPORTANT: The service and front-end application MUST BOTH RUN UNDER THE SAME ACCOUNT.
Currently the installer requires that this account be:
- a member of the local Administrator's group
- protected by a non-blank password
[Note that #2 is not required for all operating systems and service packs, but is strongly recommended]
When the 'Install Service Component' option is selected, the currently active account will be suggested as the account used to run the service. We strongly recommend that you do not change to a different account, as the installer populates the user-specific section of the registry with values that are needed by both the service and the front end application. If you wish to select a different account, the recommended approach is to quit the installer, logon under the desired account and re-run the installer. Remember that the front end must always run under the same account as the service.
Take care to enter the correct password during installation otherwise the service will encounter logon errors when an attempt is made to start it (typically error 1069).
You can install / uninstall the service component at any time simply by running the EventMeister install wizard (the EventMeister installation program) again. None of your settings will be affected by this, but it's always wise to take a backup before making any changes. When installing over the top of an existing installation always quit the application first. It is also advisable to stop the service to avoid unnecessary reboots.
Checking Whether the Service Is Running
When you have the application (front-end) running, the presence of the letters 'SVC ON' in the right hand of the status bar indicates that the service is installed and running; SVC OFF indicates that the service is installed but did not appear to be running when the application started. If there is no SVC indicator then the service component is not installed.
If you don't have the application (front-end) running you can check the status of the EventMeister service using the Windows Service Manager.
Starting and Stopping the Service
IMPORTANT: Always quit the EventMeister application (front-end) before starting or stopping the service component.
You can start, stop and restart the EventMeister Service Component using the Windows Service Manager. For more information about working with services please consult the Windows on-line help.
Launching the Application (Front-end)
IMPORTANT: If the service is installed the application will attempt to communicate with it immediately on start-up. This may cause a slight delay before the main window is presented. This will be particularly noticeable if the service is installed but not running.
Regardless of whether the service is installed and running or not, you can launch the application at any time. The application will determine whether the service is running and respond accordingly.
