Backing Up & Transferring Settings

Backing Up your Settings and Data

The bulk of EventMeister's settings are stored in a sub-directory of the "Application Data" folder that is specific to the account under which EventMeister runs, e.g.

C:\Documents and Settings\<<Account>>\Application Data\Technology Lighthouse\EventMeister

A fast way to get there on XP/2K/2003 is to type %appdata% into the Run box off the Start menu, and navigate down thru' "Technology Lighthouse\EventMeister"

  1. Quit EventMeister (and the EventMeister Service if running) so that it doesn't change any data during transfer
  2. Take a backup of the entire EventMeister directory.

Transferring EventMeister Settings to Another Computer

If you wish to move your EventMeister installation to another computer you can simply take a backup of your existing data files folder (see "Backing up your Settings and Data" above) and overwrite the corresponding directory on the target machine. This will only transfer feed and notification settings and data. You will need to manually re-enter configuration options such as email settings, startup options, etc.

  1. Quit your existing EventMeister installation (and the EventMeister Service if running) so that it doesn't change any data during transfer
  2. Take a backup of the entire EventMeister directory (keep a second copy of this just in case!).
  3. Overwrite the corresponding directory on the target computer.
  4. Install EventMeister on the target computer.

Your fresh EventMeister installation should now have all of your existing feed and notification settings.

Transferring EventMeister Settings to a Different Drive/Folder

If required, it is possible to instruct EventMeister to hold its settings in folder other than the Application Data folder.

Warning - the following procedure involves editing the system registry. Do not attempt this procedure unless you are familiar with registry editing. Mistakes made during registry editing could cause malfunction of the operating system, services and applications, and even data loss.

  1. Quit your existing EventMeister installation (and the Service Component if it is running) so that it doesn't change any data during transfer
  2. In Explorer, navigate to the folder where you want the data to reside. Create a new folder in here with the title "Technology Lighthouse".
  3. Move the entire EventMeister data directory (see above for location) to the Technology Lighthouse folder you created in (2).
  4. Change the following registry value to match the new path to the directory containing Technology Lighthouse\Eventmeister, EXCLUDING the trailing backslash. For example, if the directory is now held on the "D" drive at root level, the registry value should read "D:" (without the quotes)
    Key: HKCU\Software\TLHouse\EventMeister, value AppData
  5. Under the same key, create a new DWORD value called ForceAppData and set its value to 1.
  6. Restart the service (if applicable) and relaunch the application.

Note#1: To revert to using the standard location for the data directory, either delete the ForceAppData value or re-install EventMeister.

Note#2: Installing newer versions of EventMeister will overwrite your custom setting for the AppData value - you must repeat the change after installation, but before EventMeister runs.

Upgrading to LogMeister

If you wish to upgrade to LogMeister from EventMeister but retain your existing settings you simply need to rename your application data folder to "LogMeister" before installing LogMeister. This will only transfer feed and notification settings and data. You will need to manually re-enter configuration options such as email settings, startup options, etc.

  1. Quit your existing EventMeister installation (and the EventMeister Service if running) so that it doesn't change any data during transfer
  2. Take a backup of the entire EventMeister directory (see 'backing up data' above).
  3. Rename the EventMeister directory to LogMeister
  4. Install LogMeister

Your fresh LogMeister installation should now have all of your EventMeister feed and notification settings.
