Using Cabinets (Personal Portals)

Cabinets are user-defined information connectors for managing access to sources of information. You can define and use Cabinets to organize bookmarks based on projects, subjects or any organization that serves your needs.

A Cabinet comprises of user-defined collection of Drawer and Section Tabs. You can define a maximum of 128 Cabinets for your desktop. Use the Cabinet menu to switch between Cabinet(s). The relationship between Cabinet, Drawer and Section Tabs is depicted below:

Cabinates

Note: The Free version of Optimal Desktop only allows for one Cabinet and 5 Drawers.

You can operate two Cabinet(s) simultaneously, each in a different panel and quickly switch between them using the F9 key.

You can customize the look & feel of each Cabinet and assign individual skins and captions based on your needs.

You can also share your Cabinet(s) with other Optimal Desktop and Feli-X users. You can also export your Cabinet links to an XML file. The XML files can be viewed by any RSS Reader on any platform (i.e. MAC, Linux)

Feli-X (optional feature) export module let's you export your cabinets as read-only files. Feli-X browser is the reader program for Optimal Desktop Cabinet(s) and is free of charge.

Creating a New Cabinet

You can create a new Cabinet, as follows:

Click on the "Cabinet" or "New Tab" menu and select "New Cabinet".

OR

Right Click on the border of the window and Choose New Cabinet from the context menu.

Activating a Cabinet Within a Panel

When you create a new Cabinet, the Cabinet is added to the list of Cabinet(s) already configured for your desktop.

The Cabinet menu has a list of all the Cabinets in your Desktop File. Simply select the Cabinet you want to use.

Customizing a Cabinet

To Customize a Cabinet go to the Cabinets menu and choose Cabinet Manager.

In the General tab, you can customize your Cabinet name, caption, tooltip and icon specifications. See Creating a New Cabinet for more information.

In the Settings tab, you can specify captions and icons for ListView, TreeView and PreView windows within your Cabinet.
