Tips & Tricks
Cabinets
To quickly create a new Cabinet, right click on the empty space next to the Tabs.
Every time you change Cabinet's in a panel all of your open windows close. To keep the section and page windows open within a cabinet, use F9 to switch panels and then load a new Cabinet in the new panel.
Drawer Tabs
To change the Default Section in a newly created Drawer go to Tools > Desktop Manager > Template Manager.
Section Tabs
Double Click on the Section Tab to get to the root of that Section.
Double Click on the first Page Tab in a Section view to close the window.
Access all the Section Tabs in a Drawer from the Customize Drawer menu (Right Click on a Drawer Tab).
Moving Tabs
To re-position a Tab (Drawer, Section or Page tab) select the tab and drag it upwards or downwards, while holding the ALT key down. You can move Section and Page Tabs between Drawers using this method.
Optimal Bookmark
Optimal Bookmark links work similar to Section Tab links. To create new Optimal Bookmark folders drag URL's or files directly from your desktop or the Internet.
The advantage is that you can create multiple Section Tabs pointing to the same Bookmark in separate Drawers.
You can also bookmark files and folder under Optimal Bookmark. So a client web site could be the main folder and under that folder you could group links to files, or folders where you store information about that subject.
You can also share Optimal Bookmark folders by importing and exporting the desired folder as a file (*.olx).
Desktop files (*.oad) store your Optimal Bookmark files, but your cabinet files do not.
OPML files, Feeds from the NewsIsFree site and your RSS Queries are also created in Optimal Bookmark.
Custom Query
Optimal Desktop will let you define your own news criteria and deliver the result in a personalized feed using the custom query function off of Optimal Bookmark.
Use custom query to track what people say about you, your product, your customers, your competition, etc.
You can define as many personalized feeds as you like.
Desktop Search
After a while you will notice that the number of Cabinets, Drawers and Section grow. Further if you are using RSS, you will probably manage tens of feeds with hundreds and thousands of headlines.
Optimal Desktop Search let's your search your Cabinets, Drawers, Sections and RSS headlines very easily.
You can start multiple searches in independent windows. If you select a destination to jump to your active search window will jump with you.
You can use Search to aggregate headlines on specific subjects, copy the resulting headlines into a RSS container and publish the result as a new feed file.
You can also copy selected headlines to your email program. The link and the comments are copied to your email with one click.
Google Search
You can seamlessly integrate Google Desktop Search with Optimal Desktop.
Install the programs on your computer, start the program and drag the icon in the address bar to your Optimal Access toolbar, hold the Alt key, you will be prompted to add this command to your user defined commands.
Now every time you invoke the Google Search command, the search window will open as a new Page tab so you can search for your emails and documents from inside Optimal Desktop.
Copying Links to email
You can copy all or some of the links in a Cabinet, Drawer or Section to outlook. The caption for the tabs plus the comments in the comment field of each tab is copied to your email program.
You can access these commands from the toolbar, or simply right click on a Drawer, or a Section tab and choose the "Send all Drawer Links by email" or "Send all Cabinet Links by email". You get the opportunity to refine your selection through a wizard.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Many users still type faster that they can move the mouse and prefer the keyboard to work. Optimal Desktop™ let's you create your own keyboard shortcuts to activate commands and launch applications.
You can create several shortcut combinations using the keyboard shortcuts CTRL, ALT, SHIFT and Function keys F1 to F12 with alphanumeric characters. For example, you can define a shortcut for creating a new Drawer in this form: CTRL+ALT+F2.
You can specify more than 1 shortcut for an action.
