Validate URL & Entire Website

Validate a URL (Pro Pro, Std Std, Lite Lite)

All editions allow you to open and check URLs. To do this, the document must first be opened from the web and the source must be visible in the editor. You can do this by choosing File->Open from the Web. You will need an active network connection when opening documents from other computers or from the Internet. Once the document has been loaded into the editor, it can then be validated as if it were a local document or file. However, editing and saving the document will not change the document that was sent from the server. You will have to change the original document that is normally located on the web server. Often times this is done by uploading the file to the web server by using an FTP program.

Validate URL

(Pro Pro, Std Std, Lite Lite) Another way to check URLs and dynamic sites is to use the integrated web browser available in the standard and professional editions. While browsing with the integrated web browser, the source for the document being displayed is shown in an editor tab and can be easily validated. As you navigate through the web, you can also have the source automatically validated after each page is loaded. To do this, make sure that this feature is checked in the Editor Options. Using the integrated editor is a great way to check a website with dynamic pages such as those made by ASP, CFML, or PHP scripts.

Validate an Entire Website (Pro Pro, Std Std, Lite Lite)

You can validate an entire website (or part of one) with a single URL or file using the Batch Wizard.

Validating an Entire Website With a Single URL or File

  1. Open the Batch Wizard by running CSE HTML Validator Pro and then choosing Tools->Batch Wizard or pressing F2.
  2. Choose File->New List or press Ctrl+N to create a new target list.
  3. Add a target that specifies the root page of your website. This can be a local file or a URL. To add a local file target, press Ctrl+F. To add a URL, press Ctrl+U. For example, if your site is at "http://www.mydomain.com/mysite/" then press Ctrl+U to add the URL "http://www.mydomain.com/mysite/" to the target list. You can also specify a folder where your website files are located by adding a folder target (Ctrl+D).
  4. Select the target that you just added and press F5 to view the target properties.
  5. Go to the Follow Links tab and check the follow links checkbox. Click OK.
  6. Press F4 to go to the Batch Wizard Options and select the "Validator" tool as the tool to use. Click OK.
  7. Press the Process List button (or press F6) to start the validation and process the target list.

See the Batch Wizard topic for more information about the Batch Wizard.

See the Batch Wizard Troubleshooting topic if you encounter problems.

NOTE: The trial version may be limited to checking a small number of documents so that the limited number of trial validations are not quickly used up. To fully use the Batch Wizard, a licensed version is required.
