Integrated Web Browser

The integrated web browser requires Microsoft Internet Explorer v4.0 or greater. You can access the integrated web browser from the View menu or by pressing F8.

You can use the integrated web browser in one of two available modes:

  • Preview Mode - Use this mode to preview your HTML documents to see how they look in Internet Explorer. Preview mode is active when the Preview Mode menu option is checked. You can even preview your documents while you work on them by having the preview be automatically refreshed. To have HTML Validator automatically refresh the web browser preview while you work, make sure that the Auto Refresh in Preview Mode menu option is checked.
  • Browse Mode - Use this mode to browse the web using the integrated web browser. Browse mode is active when the Browse Mode menu option is checked. While browsing, the source for the document being displayed is shown in an editor tab named "WB Source" and can be easily validated. As you navigate through the web, you can have the source automatically validated after each page is loaded. To automatically validate pages as you browse the web, make sure that the Auto Validate in Browse Mode menu option is checked. Using the integrated web browser is a great way to check a website with dynamic pages such as those made by ASP, CFML, or PHP scripts.

  • The browser's status bar (shown only when the browser is not docked) can be turned on or off using the View Status Bar menu option.
  • When the browser is not docked, and another application receives focus, the browser window can be automatically hidden. To select whether the browser window is hidden or not when HTML Validator is not the active application, use the Hide When Inactive menu option.

Notes

  • Be sure to keep your computer and Internet Explorer updated with the latest patches and security fixes from Microsoft.
  • The browser window can be docked or undocked. To quickly dock the window if it is undocked, double-click on the browser's title bar. To quickly undock the window if it is docked, double-click on the drag handle.
  • When using the integrated web browser to view websites using frames, only the source code of the frameset document may display. This is normal behavior and may be improved in the future. To view the source of the framed documents, you must navigate directly to the framed document and not to the frameset document. One way you can do this is by navigating to the frameset document, validating the document, selecting the Links tab in the Results Window, bringing up the pop-up menu for the link that you want to view, and selecting Open Link in Browser.
  • If you find that the browser is switching the page that it is viewing unexpectedly, then you may be in preview mode when you don't want to be. To exit preview mode, select the Browse Mode menu option. See below for more information about preview mode.
  • Preview mode displays the document that you are working on in the integrated web browser. When you switch the document that you are editing by selecting a different tab, the web browser is automatically updated to preview the selected document. When not in preview mode, the web browser acts more like a normal web browser and does not change when you select different documents to edit.
