Editor Options

CSE HTML Validator's Editor is extremely configurable. The Editor Options dialog box allows you to configure many options that affect how the Editor operates.

General Tabs

This is where you can change general and miscellaneous options that affect HTML Validator's integrated editor.

General 1 Tab

General 1 Tab

StartUp and ShutDown Options

  • Automatically open documents that were open at the last shutdown - Check this box to save a list of open documents when you close HTML Validator. The next time you run HTML Validator, HTML Validator accesses this list and automatically reloads the documents in the list so that you can start working where you left off. This option is enabled by default.
  • Automatically load scratch pads at startup and save them at shutdown - (Pro Pro, Std Std, Lite Lite) Check this box to automatically load the scratch pads at startup and save them at shutdown. By default, the scratch pads are stored in files named "scratchpad1.txt" and "scratchpad2.txt" and placed in Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\AI Internet Solutions\CSE HTML Validator\8.0. If this box is not checked, then the scratch pads will not be loaded from disk and will be blank at startup. You can still use them if this option is not checked, but anything left in the scratch pads will not be saved at shutdown unless this option is checked. There will be no warning that you are losing data by not saving the scratch pads at shutdown. This option is enabled by default.
  • Periodically ask to check for a new version of HTML Validator at startup - Check this box to automatically be asked to check for a new version of HTML Validator approximately every few weeks. This option is enabled by default.
  • If an instance of CSE is already running at startup then ask to run a separate instance - Check this box to display a message asking to run another instance of CSE HTML Validator if an instance of the editor is already running when another instance is started. Running multiple instances is not recommended due to potential conflicts among running instances. This option is enabled by default.

Miscellaneous Options

  • Automatically save document (don't ask to save) before viewing with an external viewer - Before viewing the document that you are working on with an external viewer, it must be saved to disk so that the external viewer can access it. If you try to view a document with an external viewer that has not been saved, then HTML Validator will ask you to save it first. You must save it if you want to view your document with an external viewer. By checking this option, HTML Validator will not ask you to save your document if it has changed, instead HTML Validator will automatically save your document and then show it to you in the external viewer. This option is not enabled by default.
  • Automatically validate documents when opened - Check this box to automatically validate documents when they are first opened in the editor. HTML Validator will only try to validate the document types that it knows how to validate by using the document's file extension to determine what type of document it is. This option is not enabled by default.
  • Automatically revalidate documents when reloaded - Check this box to automatically revalidate documents when they are reloaded. Only documents that were previously validated before they are reloaded are revalidated. This option is enabled by default.
  • Enable dynamic refresh in the Shell tabs in the Resource Window - (Pro Pro, Std Std, Lite Lite) Check this option to enable automatic checking for file and folder changes, such as additions and deletions, and automatically update/refresh the Shell tabs to reflect the changes. On some systems, enabling this option may cause problems. This option is not enabled by default.
  • Enable password security - Check this option to show asterisks for characters in password fields, such as the password field in the Open from the Web dialog box. Additionally, if this option is checked, then passwords will not be stored in the registry. Unchecking this option makes the password fields easier to use at the cost of security: asterisks will not be used and previous passwords used may be saved in the registry for easier use. Note that usernames and passwords (if used to access URLs) are stored insecurely in Batch Wizard target lists regardless of the setting of this option. If you are not working in a secure environment and are not concerned about people looking at your screen and viewing your passwords, then you may want to uncheck this option. This option is enabled by default.

General 2 Tab

Link Checking Options (Pro Pro, Std Std, Lite Lite)

  • Send usernames and passwords when only domains match - Check this box to send usernames and passwords when checking links for documents that have been opened from the web using a username and password and when the link being checked is to the same domain as the source document, regardless of the folder. If this box is not checked, then usernames and passwords will be sent only when both the domain and folder/path of the link being checked matches that of the source document. Checking this box may send usernames and passwords to more locations and may be less secure. This option also affects URL targets with usernames and passwords in the Batch Wizard. This option is not enabled by default.
  • Automatically check links in the background - Check this box to constantly check unchecked links in the background while you work. The link checker will automatically go into action when you are working with a document that has had links extracted that have not yet been checked. If HTML Validator finds bad links in the document that you are working with, then a red square will appear before the Links tab to indicate that bad links have been found. If all links have been found to be good, then a green square will appear. This option is enabled by default.

Integrated Web Browser Options (Pro Pro, Std Std, Lite Lite)

For more information about the integrated web browser, including information about preview mode, please see the help page for the integrated web browser.

  • When in preview mode, automatically refresh the web browser - Check this box so that the web browser is automatically refreshed every few seconds when in preview mode. This allows you to see how your document looks as you work on it and change it. This option is not enabled by default.
  • When in preview mode, refresh browser when document is saved - Check this box to refresh the integrated web browser when it is in preview mode and the document that is being previewed is saved. This option is enabled by default.
  • When not in preview mode, automatically validate the web browser source - Check this box so that HTML Validator automatically validates the URLs that you visit as you visit them when the web browser is not in preview mode. This option is enabled by default.
  • Extensions to preview - Specify the file extensions of the files that can be previewed in the integrated web browser when the browser is in preview mode. Use a comma separated list of extensions. This prevents certain files from being previewed, such as css files. Previewing css files by themselves is not useful and may cause problems.

Editor Tabs

This is where you can change the general and miscellaneous options that affect HTML Validator's integrated editor.

Editor 1 Tab

Text Edit Options

  • Right margin - Set this option to the number of characters where you would like the vertical right margin line drawn. This will help you keep your lines a certain length by providing a visual indicator of how long your lines are. For the right margin line to appear and to be visible, you must also have the right margin viewable using View->Editor->Right Margin. The default is 80 characters.
  • Tab stops - This is a comma separated list of tab stop columns. Pressing the TAB key will place the cursor at the column of the next tab stop. The default is "3,6,9,12". Pressing tab past the last tab stop specified will place the cursor at column locations that are multiples of 3 (this is calculated from the difference between the last two tab stops, in this case, 12-9).

Font and Background Color

  • Press the Choose Font button to change the font that is used in the editor. You can only select monospaced fonts. Monospaced fonts are fonts where all characters are of equal width. This is different from proportional fonts, where each character in a font may be of a different width. Proportional fonts cannot be used by CSE HTML Validator.
  • Press the Font Color button to change the editor font's color. Note that changing the color has an effect only if syntax highlighting is disabled or not available for the file type being edited. The default is navy.
  • Press the Background Color button to change the editor's background color. The default is white.
  • Press the Line Number Color button to change the color that line numbers are displayed with (if line numbers are visible). The default is black.

Editor 2 Tab

CheckBox Options

  • Auto Indent - Check this box to automatically place the cursor under the first non-whitespace character in the preceding line when you press the ENTER key. This option is enabled by default.
  • Limit EOL - Check this box to prevent the cursor from being positioned past the end of a line. If checked, then attempting to place the cursor past the end of a line will result in the cursor being placed at the last character position of the line. This option is enabled by default.
  • Back Unindents - Check this box to align the cursor with the previous indentation level from the preceding line when you press the BACKSPACE key. This option is enabled by default.
  • Double-Click Line - Check this box to be able to select a line by double-clicking anywhere on the line. If this box is not checked, then double-clicking on the line will only select a word. Note that double-clicking to select a word when this option is off will allow word select mode. Note that a line can also be selected by triple-clicking it. This option is not enabled by default.
  • Use Tab Character - Check this box to place an actual tab character instead of spaces in the document when the TAB key is pressed. This option is enabled by default.
  • Cursor On Tabs - Check this box to make the cursor jump to tab characters when navigating with the cursor keys. This option is enabled by default.
  • Wrap at Margin - Check this box to wrap text at the right margin when word wrap is on. You can set the right margin in the Text Edit Options in the Validator 1 tab. This option is not enabled by default.
  • Persistent Blocks - Check this box to keep a marked block (selected text) selected even when the cursor is moved. This option is not enabled by default.
  • Overwrite Blocks - Check this box to replace a marked block (selected text) with whatever is typed next. If Persistent Blocks is checked, then the typed text is appended to the marked block. This option is enabled by default.
  • Select Only Text - Check this box to highlight only the selected text when text is selected (this is Notepad style). If this box is checked and all the text on a line is selected, then the line will only be highlighted to the end of the text and any unused line space past the end of the text is not highlighted. Checking this box also prevents blank lines from being highlighted when selected. Uncheck this box to enable highlighting of entire lines and blank lines when they are selected. This option is enabled by default.
  • Leave Trailing Spaces - Check this box to keep trailing space characters, such as spaces and tabs if they are at the end of a line. If this box is unchecked, then these characters are automatically removed. Note that unchecking this option may cause loaded documents and documents opened from the web to become "modified" (unsaved) if any trailing spaces are automatically removed. This option is enabled by default.
