Text Extraction

To quickly get started with Caterpillar, click the large Extraction button then click Browse... next to the From: file path text box. A dialogue will open enabling you to choose the source folder containing your web pages for processing. Once you have chosen your folder click OK and it's path will appear in the From: text box.

Next, enter a new project folder in the To: text box. This is the folder where the extracted Caterpillar file containing all the text for translation will be saved. The folder will be created during the extraction process.

If the source folder contains subfolders, and you wish text to be extracted from any web pages in these folders, make sure the Include Subfolders checkbox is checked.

Finally click the Extract button at the bottom right to begin extraction. The percentage bar shows how the extraction process is progressing. Extraction will be complete when the bar reaches 100%.

  • You can abort the extraction process at any time by pressing the Esc key (Escape).
  • Once extraction is complete, you can translate the segments in the extracted text file using any 3rd party software of your choice. It is important that the formatting of the file remains unchanged during translation to ensure Caterpillar can read your translated file successfully during the integration process. If in doubt, test with a small sample project first to make sure all is well.
  • The source web pages will be required again by Caterpillar during integration. Therefore, after extraction, the folder containing the original web pages should remain untouched until after the project has been completed. If the web pages are modified then Caterpillar may not be able to integrate your translated text back into the web pages correctly. If you need to move a project to another machine part way through then this can be done - please see the help topic Moving a Project.
  • The Caterpillar text output file created during extraction does not have to remain in the same folder. It can be moved around freely.
