FAQ
How Do I Purchase FtpXQ?
You can purchase FtpXQ securely online directly from our web site at www.datawizard.net/Buy/buy.htm. Alternatively, you can choose the menu item Purchase Paid Version under the Help menu item.
Can I Use The FTP Server From Internet Explorer (IE)?
Yes, you can. FtpXQ has been tested with IE5 and IE6. You can log in by simply pointing to the URL:
ftp://<your IP address or domain name here>
IE should prompt you for a user ID and password if no anonymous user is enabled (otherwise it will use the anonymous ID). To download file, right click on them and choose Copy To Folder.
To pass logon ID and password information in the URL, use the format:
ftp://user name:password@<your IP address or domain name here>
Can I Use The FTP Server From A Cable Or DSL Line?
Yes, you can. Be aware that the ability to host an FTP server depends on your service provider: some providers deliberately block users from hosting FTP servers. Also, it is possible to experience problems with certain users connecting because of network setup and configuration issues. If you are having problems figuring out whether you can and how to host an FTP server on your IP, please contact your internet service provider. Please also see the FAQ regarding using FtpXQ with a dynamic IP.
I Keep Getting The Message 'Connection Lost'. Why Can't FTP Clients Connect To The Server?
This can happen if you do not have the appropriate entries in the IP Screen tab. Having the string "*.*.*.*" in the listbox on the left is the default, and lets all client connect. If you have deleted or upgraded from a previous versions that did not have this feature, you may be missing the correct entries.
How Do I Use FtpXQ Behind A Firewall?
Setting up an FTP server to run from behind a firewall can range from being fairly simple to incredibly complex, depending on your network setup.
If you are using Network Address Translation (NAT), then the simplest way to set things up is:
- Enable PASV mode from the Miscellaneous tab on the FTP Options screen.
- Set the appropriate port range from the Miscellaneous tab on the FTP Options screen.
- Enter the IP address in the Miscellaneous tab on the FTP Options screen that FtpXQ should provide when telling the FTP client which IP to connect to (this should be the IP address that is visible from the outside, which is forwarded to the IP address that the FTP server actually listens on).
Now when a client connects and converses with the FTP server, it will appear to the client as if it is talking to an FTP server at a specific address, which is actually forwarded to your internal IP address which the FTP server is listening on.
If you are just using a simple firewall, the easiest way to configure things is as follows:
- Enable PASV mode from the Miscellaneous tab on the FTP Options screen.
- Choose a port range from the Miscellaneous tab on the FTP Options screen that you will then configure your firewall to allow through (the range should be adjusted based on the number of concurrent users you expect to be using the server).
- Ensure that the IP address in the Miscellaneous tab on the FTP Options screen is correct in that it reflects your true IP address (so that the client can connect to it using PASV mode).
Does FtpXQ Support Telnet or Web Server For My Users?
FtpXQ does not natively provide Telnet or Web server services. If your site needs Telnet or Web server access consider DataWizard Technologies' TelnetXQ and WebXQ Servers. Free 30 day demo versions are available for download from our web site at www.datawizard.net.
