History of Internet
In 1969 the U.S. Department of Defence began a program called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). Its aim was to develop a computer communications network that was both secure and capable of surviving military attacks. It eventually led to the development of the Internet.
The Internet was designed to allow information to move freely between different types of computer networks. This was achieved through the use of special computers called routers. The interconnected computers needed a common data transmission standard called a protocol. The networking protocol that was eventually chosen is called TCP/IP.
The Internet moved away form military use as educational institutions and researchers took up the new technology. Soon the general public began to use the new technology. Eventually it became the Internet we know today.
