Creating Virtual CD Server
Making your CD Images for the Server
If you plan to have a large selection of CD images, you may want establish a set of directories in advance, on your host server, that helps logically group the images. This could be organized by department (Finance, Sales, Marketing, etc.), or types of images (Programs, Utilities, OSes, Graphics, Audio, etc.); or, perhaps the dates of data CDs (subscription 2006-01, etc.). Establishing this structure now will save you time and effort later. Also keep in mind that you may wish to limit access to specific groups of users. You can set various rights to each directory to control who can use different sets of images.
Next, select the CDs you wish to make available to your various client workstation users. You can use any client workstation with CD Anywhere installed to make images of your physical CDs. While CD Anywhere could be installed on the host server to save your images, it is not necessary, nor will CD Anywhere be used on the server for others to access the images.
To create each image, use the Create image feature described in CD Creator. When asked where to store the image, select the network host computer and directories as desired.
As you create each ISO image file, be sure to use a meaningful filenames. For program files, it is often useful to include the complete version as part of the filename. For example, if you were imaging a site license copy of the AutoSave program CD, a good name to chose would be: AutoSave v1.07.iso
You do not need to load any images into virtual drives on the system you use to create images, as this will be done from each client workstation.
Server Permissions
Make certain that the intended clients have the necessary directory and file permissions to access the CD image files. If desired, the permissions can be made for read-only, to prevent accidental erasure or modification to the images.
