Backup Screen

TrakLoan allows you to back up your data to the hard drive and/or to an external medium at any time. In addition, TrakLoan forces a hard drive backup just before the following events: (1) when you post the journal, (2) when you restore a backup, and (3) when you compact the database.

We recommend strongly that you back up your TrakLoan data regularly to an external medium such as tape or writeable CD’s. Floppy disks are unreli- able and hard disks can crash. Besides backing up to an external medium we rec- ommend that you store one or more of your recent backups off-site, away from your place of business. If all your records are in one place, a fire or other catas- trophe can destroy your loan data as well as your computer, leaving you with no re- cords.

The Backup Screen

To get to the Backup screen, use the File | Backups menu sequence from the Main screen or click the Backup tool Backup on the toolbar.

The list box on the right side of the Backup screen (Figure 27) shows all the current backups stored on your hard drive. Each entry begins with a prefix that tells you the reason the backup was made, followed by the date and time of the backup.

If you made a backup with the Hard Drive [Backup] button, the backup will be prefixed with the word, ‘‘MANUAL.‘‘

A backup forced by the system just before you posted the journal will have the prefix, ‘‘PRE-POST.”

A backup forced just before you restored an earlier backup will have the prefix, ‘‘RESTORE.’’

A backup forced just before you compacted the database will have the prefix, ‘‘COMPACT.’’
