Backup Types
Full Backup – When selected, a backup will copy the selected files. It can be quickly and easily restored.
Incremental Backup (based on the time stamp) – When selected, a first increnental backup will copy the selected files to the backup, which is automatically a full backup. The subsequent backups will only copy newer files or files that have changed to the new backup files since the previous backup. The incremental backup file can be used as the file to synchronize with the second computer.
New incremental backups or incremental backups that have been cleared will be performed as if they are full backups when it is run for the first time. To clear an incremental backup so that it will start over again, right click the task in the Backup Summary tab at the bottom of the program window and select Reset to clear it.
Incremental Backup (based on archive bit) – When selected, all files that have not been archived (with "A" shown in file attributes) will be backed up.
Differential Backup – When selected, a first differential backup will copy the selected files to the backup, which is automatically a full backup. The subsequent backups will only copy newer files or files that have changed to the new backup files since the first time the differential backup is run.
New differential backups or differential backups that have been cleared will be performed as if they are full backups when it is run for the first time. To clear a differential backup so that it will start over again, right click the task in the Backup Summary tab at the bottom of the program window and select Reset to clear it.
Current Date Backup – When selected, a backup will copy the selected files that have been modified the day the Current Date Backup is performed.
You can also use the Date filter feature to back up only files and folders of any particular date of your choice.
Add date and time as part of the name - will add date and time stamp to your backup name. When selected, a backup will create a new backup each time and copy selected files to the new backup file. All backups have the date and time as part of the file name. With this option selected, newer backups will not overwrite old backups.
You also have the choice to:
Reset files as archived - will reset the archive bit on files that are backed up.
Include and Exclude Filters
You can specify filters to optionally exclude or include particular file types and folders based on the criteria you enter. Wildcard formats can be used.
Use exclusion filter
When this option is checked off, files and folders on the filter list will be excluded. Click on the Add Filter button to add exclusion filters. TurboBackup comes with built-in exclusion filter templates for Temporary Folder, Internet Cache Folder, Recycle Bin, and so on. You can select Browse to add exclusion folders. If you selected Include Subfolders on the first wizard page, all subfolders will be automatically excluded and vice versa. You can also select New to create your exclusion filters for files and folders. Click on New in the filter list to enter file extensions and wildcard to exclude specified file types. See examples below.
Use inclusion filter
When this option is checked off, only those file types on the filter list will be included. Click on the Add Filter button to add inclusion filters. TurboBackup comes with built-in inclusion filter templates for pictures, documents, PDF, music, video, and so on. You can also select New to create your inclusion filters for files types. Click on New in the filter list to enter file extensions and wildcard to include specified file types. See examples below.
Examples to exclude or include file types
Extensions and wildcard formats must be followed or separated by semi-colon (;). For example:
- *.jpg;
- *.jpg;*.gif;
- *.ext;*.ex2;*.ex3;w*.doc;
Date Filter
Only add files modified from - check off this option to exclude files dated before the date shown; click Set Today to insert today's date.
Folder Options
Folder Options - These options are applicable to back up using Zip format (.zip) and Duplicate Files and Folders. Backup in TurboBackup format (.tbz) will automatically store drive and full path information.
Do not store folder names - includes file names only, without their paths. This option will not keep the folder structure.
Store all folder names - includes the complete path (below the drive letter) of the files in your selection. This option will keep the same folder structure.
Store subfolder names - includes only the subfolder paths of files included. This option will keep the same relative or subfolder structure.
Include empty folder – When checked off, TurboBackup will include empty folders.
Log Options
Log File - Each task has a backup log. You can use the Backup Log tab at the bottom of the main program window to view backup log of the selected backup task. You can right click in the bottom right pane and select Save As to save the log file. You can also right click in the bottom right pane and select Clear All to clear the log file.
None - No backup log will be created.
Full - Full log will show detailed status of each backup.
Summary - Log summary will show the time of backups.
Clear log before backup - When this option is checked off, TurboBackup will clear the log file of the selected backup task before starting the backup.
Compression Options
Use temporary folder on compression – When checked off, TurboBackup will use temporary folder on compression (recommended). You will need ample free disk space for the Temporary folder. (See also Manage Disk Storage Usage)
Compression level - This option is applicable to back up using Zip (.zip) and Backup (.tbz) formats. Choose the compression level (0-9) to be used. Higher compression levels will result in smaller backup size but take longer to complete the task.
Advanced Options
Enable Open File Backup (Windows XP and above) - This feature is available in Windows XP, 2003 Server, and Vista. The Windows shadow copy facility will be used for copying open files when this option is enalbled. It is commonly used for those files that are locked up by Windows such as Outlook, MS Exchange Servers, MS SQL Servers, MS Access, MS Fox-Pro, and the Registry, which may otherwise not be copied. Shadow copy tends to be slow and requires ample free drive space to perform.
Skip over locked files - locked files (in use or otherwise not available) will be skipped.
Delete original file after backup - original file will be deleted after backup.Use this option with extremem caution.
User Interface
Silent Backup - When selected, no dialog or progress indicator will be displayed. The Silent backup mode is used for unattended backup when user response is not available, such as running scheduled tasks.
Backup Reminder - When selected, TurboBackup will display an on screen reminder when no backup has been performed in the specified number of days.
Show this task in Tray Icon Menu - When selected, the selected backup task will be displayed in the TurboBackup tray icon right click menu.
Do not create a catalog entry - when backups are created, they will or will not automatically be cataloged and added to the current task.
Hard Drive Overwrite Options
Hard Drive Overwrite Options - When you choose the Duplicate Files and Folders backup type, you can select one of the following options for overwriting or deleting existing files and folder on the target hard disk. You cannot, however, select any of the Prompting options when performing Silent Backup because that is a conflict.

Multiple Volume on Hard Disk
If the Multiple-volume option is checked off, you can select and enter the maximum size of each volume.
The first volume (0) is the default size, and will apply to any additional volumes. However, you may enter specific sizes for individual or additional volumes. If you do not enter a size, the system will assign a size based on the size of the space available on the media selected.
Click the first box menu to select one of the standard disk sizes; or select Customized, it will then allow you to enter a size in the second box and specify MB, KB, or Bytes. After you have specified the size, click Add to place the Volume in the window. You may select different sizes for individual volumes destined for different media or other sources. You may highlight a Volume number and click the Change button to change it or the Remove button to delete it.
CD/DVD Options
This option page is available only when CD/DVD burner(s) is present.
Auto erase CD/DVD RW (silent backup only) - Select this option only if you want to auto erase CD/DVD RW in unattended silent backup operation.
Verify (recommended) - Select this option to verify the data on CD/DVD after burning is completed. It may take a while to verify compressed backups.
Drive - If you have more than one burner, you should see all of them listed in the pulldown menu. Select the one you want to use from the pulldown list.
Speed - Select the speed you want to use from High, Medium, to Slow speed. Depending on your media, consider lowering the speed if burning failed.
Removable Media
You have the option to delete files from removable media, such as Zip disk, before backup.
Prompt me to delete all files from the media. (Cannot use this option with silent backup.)
