Back up Registry & System State
There are task templates already created by TurboBackup to back up the Registry (XP/2003/Vista) and Windows System State (2000/XP/2003). System State consists of the Registry and other components:
- Registry
- COM+ Class Registration database
- Boot files, including the system files
- Certificate Services database
- Active Directory directory service
- SYSVOL directory
- Cluster service information
- IIS Metadirectory
- System files that are under Windows File Protection
TurboBackup refers to these system components as the Windows System State. The exact system components that make up your computer's System State data depend on the computer's operating system and configuration.
You can select the My Registry or My System State task in the left panel and click on the Backup > Backup Now menu or the Backup Now Toolbar Icon to back up the Registry or Windows System State. To change the backup files, folders, and options, click on the Wizard Toolbar Icon or use the Backup/Edit menu item to edit the task script file. You can also rename a task or remove a task. To add or restore a template to the catalog, use the Backup/Template menu item to select the specific template you want to add back to the list.
If My Registry backup task, or any pre-configured task, is not listed in the left panel, select the Backup > Templates menu or the Backup > Templates > More menu to bring it in. The default option for My Registry backup is with the Open File shadow copy option enabled.
Note: TurboBackup requires MS Windows "NT Backup" (part of Windows 2000, XP, 2003) to back up System State. "NT Backup" comes with Windows OS and is an optional component (default is to include it) during Windows installation. If you only see a quick flash when you use TurboBackup to back up System State, it is most likely that your Windows OS did not include this component when it was installed. You can find out whether you have it by checking your Windows System 32 installation folder and look for "ntbackup.exe". If you cannot find it, you need to install that component from Windows CD. Although Windows XP Professional Edition and XP Home both ship with NTBackup, only XP Pro installs NTBackup by default. You can install NTBackup for XP Home by performing the following steps:
- Insert the XP Home CD-ROM.
- Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
- Double-click the ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup.
