Running Handy Backup Pro as a Service

The main feature of Handy Backup Pro is that Handy Backup Pro agent can be run in a service mode. Service mode is accessible for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

A service is usually started on the start of OS. Once a service is started, it works until either it is stopped, or computer is shut down. Handy Backup Pro supports a single-user mode when running as a service. It means that only a single user on a computer can initiate running Handy Backup Pro agent as a service. This user can be considered as administrator of Handy Backup Pro agent. He can initiate the return action: running Handy Backup Pro agent as a process.

Follow the steps below to run Handy Backup Pro in a service mode:

  1. Click the "Settings" button Settings.
  2. On the displayed "General Settings" tab mark "Run agent as service" checkbox and click "Apply".
  3. Switch to Service Wizard will be initiated. Follow wizard instructions.

  • Rights on the file system:
full access to folder and subfolders with Handy Backup Pro executable files, for example, "C:\Program Files\Novosoft\Handy Backup Pro\",
  • Rights on the registry:
rights for creation of subkeys in "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software" registry folder,
full access to "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Novosoft\Handy Backup Pro\" registry folder

When Handy Backup Pro agent is running in a service mode, Handy Backup Pro icon Handy Backup Pro disappears from the system tray.

When Handy Backup Pro agent is running in a service mode, it cannot interact with GUI (graphical user interface), if Handy Backup Pro user interface is not connected. Thus the agent cannot display message boxes corresponding to occurred errors / events (that appear when Handy Backup Pro agent is running in a process mode). All message boxes are replaced by default actions that the program should perform. You should specify these default actions on Automatic Replies tab of program Settings, if you adjust Handy Backup Pro agent to run in a service mode. Default actions are performed without interaction with a user.

The only output of Handy Backup Pro agent in the case it is running in a service mode is log file. Log file contains information on all events occurred during backup, restore and synchronization. If Handy Backup Pro user interface is connected, you can also view these log messages in log view.

Running Handy Backup Pro in a process mode

When Handy Backup Pro agent is running in a process mode, Handy Backup Pro icon Handy Backup Pro is displayed in the system tray. If several users run Handy Backup Pro on the same computer, each user has his own set of items and settings. When a user logs off, Handy Backup Pro agent work session is completed. When another user logs on and starts Handy Backup Pro, the program runs with settings of this user and his set of items. Thus Handy Backup Pro supports a multiuser mode when running as a process.

If Handy Backup Pro agent is running in a process mode and some error / event occurs, then you see a message box corresponding to occurred error / event. In this message box you select what action to perform (continue, retry, skip, or stop depending on the situation).

Note: By default Handy Backup Pro agent is started in process mode.
