About video codec

There are four Video Codecs available in Flash Video MX Pro: Sorenson H.263, Flash 8, Flash 8 alpha Video and H.264. Choose the one that meets your great demands.

First, let's see the differences between the Flash 8 codec, Sorenson H.263 codec and Flash 8 alpha Video codec. The Flash 8 codec and Flash 8 alpha video codec provide the following advantages while comparing to the Sorenson H.263 codec:

  • Encode higher quality video at the same data rate
  • Support the use of an alpha channel to create composite video
  • Keep the alpha effect of the source video file with Flash 8 alpha video codec

In order to get better quality at the same data rate, the Flash 8 codec is noticeably slower to encode, and requires more processor power to decode and play. For this reason, you should consider the lowest common denominator of computers that your audience uses when they access your Flash video content.

Generally, it is unnecessary for the common user to choose Flash 8 alpha video codec, as it will lead to a slow conversion and a big file. But it is a good idea for the professional people who want their videos to have special purpose. What's more, they can get the alpha effect very well.

If you anticipate a large user base that is using older computers, it is advisable to encode your FLV files using the Sorenson H.263 codec.

H.264 is the next-generation video compression technology in the MPEG-4 standard, also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 (ISO/IEC 14496-10). H.264 delivers excellent video quality across the entire bandwidth spectrum — from 3G (Mobile phones) to HD (Broadcast) and everything in between. H.264 is now mandatory for the HD-DVD and Blu-ray specifications (the two formats for high-definition DVDs) and ratified in the latest versions of the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasters) and 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) standards. Numerous broadcast, cable, videoconferencing and consumer electronics companies consider H.264 the video codec of choice for their new products and services, including Apple, Sony, Nokia, SanDisk, Palm, Blackberry and even Microsoft. So we also provide H.264 codec for you.

H.264 delivers even higher quality at lower bitrates. H.264 will deliver the same or better quality when to compared to the same encoding profile in Sorenson H.263. When you choose the codec, you should consider the complexity of the content, the desired reach, ability to archive, and licensing considerations.
